I want to setup a virtual network that a couple of machines can use
privately. This seems straightforward. However, I would also like the
machines to be able to access the Internet. The host machine can access the
Internet. How do I configure the virtual network so that the machines on it
can access the Internet as well? The host machine is a powerful laptop, but
as such, the it changes networks frequently (for demos etc.) Do I need to
set up the host as a router or have it use ICS or something like that? Is
there a step-by-step HowTo on this somewhere? Once set up, it needs to be
easy for non-techies to use for demoing at different locations.

Unfortunately due to other things that are setup on my laptop I can't easily
write up a tutorial about this, however I'd be itnerested in writing this on
www.aspdeveloper.net with some screen shots, etc.

The basic answer is you would set this up just like you would any other
network sharing, so ICS could do it, a proxy server (most likely not the
best solution), or any other method used to share a normal network.

In addition the guests could all see each other if you do ICS, and you could
add an IPSec policy to stop them from being accessible by the outside world.

I turned on ICS for the loopback adapter as stated...

If I turn on DHCP service for the virtual network that uses the Loopback
adapter, then what would I set the gateway to?

I think I am still missing a piece of the puzzle here.

Setting up ICS is a bit confusing - you actually have to enable it on
the network interface you want to share off of (i.e. the phsyical
network card - not the loopback adapter)

That makes more sense and it worked. The Admin documentation needs to be
updated- it specifically says to enable ICS on the Loopback Adapter in order
to enable NAT. What also is not clear in the documentation is how to set up
the virtual network for NAT. It just references the section on how to create
a virtual network, which does not talk about how to do it for the loopback
adapter and NAT. For example, I would have thought I would need to enable
the DHCP server in this virtual network, but apparently the loopback adapter
is doing that already (unless it is some combo of ICS and loopback adapter).

Another question: now that this is working, what is the best way to assign
specific IP addresses to the server virtual machines on the virtual network?
The IP addresses appear to be assigned by ICS or the Loopback Adapter, so
giving the servers a static IP via a reservation would be ideal, but just
assigning a static IP would also work, as long as no one else changes the IP
range on the loopback adapter. (It would be great if this kind of thing was
addressed in the documentation somewhere).
