1. Why would SCSI be faster than IDE? I can see that in the real world, but
I'm not clear why in the virtual world?

2. Do you have any metrics on the level of performance improvement?

Hi Thomas,

I do not have specific figures n the performance difference - but the
main advantage of SCSI inside of the virtual machine is that we are able
to install our optimized SCSI driver as part of the Additions that
avoids a lot of the emulation overhead.

until IDE/SATA comes out with a decent NCQ (Native Command Queueing) the
IDE/SATA world will be that step or two behind SCSI... its light years
ahead when it comes to asking a SCSI drive to take requests (even some of my
older ultra2 drives out perform SATA 150 drives on I/O) i liken the battle
like two cars.. SATA being a car that can do 150 but only in the
straightaways and never in traffic.. SCSI does 160 or 320 and its the same
speed in traffic, around corners etc....

there are some NCQ SATA Drives showing up from teh likes of Seagate... but
many of the new controllers don't even have it built in.. and the ones that
do it appears to be a slowdown in some cases on disk i/o....

if you can afford scsi then go with scsi... (and if you MUST have the I/O)
if you only need storage then SATA/IDE works fine for that to say archive
and such
