FINALLY solved installation problem in XP (SP2)

I've been trying for over a month to get this installed on Windows XP, and
finally made it work. The error I had was, during install, immediately after
"generating script actions for install" the installer failed with no visible
error message.

A log file is in fact generated for the install in the TEMP directory. Open
a command prompt and type SET to see the environment variables; mine was in
\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Temp. Clean out the
contents of this directory and run the installer to see the log file it
creates - the name was not intuitive.

The file is wordy, but scroll through it. The error I saw was:
---------------
Setting up directory "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application
Data\Microsoft\Virtual Server"...
Setting up directory "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Shared
Virtual Machines\"...
Setting up directory "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Shared
Virtual Networks\"...
Failed to create directory "C:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Documents\Shared Virtual Networks" - Error 5
Failed to set security settings for "C:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Documents\Shared Virtual Networks\" - Error 2
CaSetupVSDirectories() failed!
Action ended 19:25:58: CaSetupVSDirectories. Return value 3.
---------------

Upon investigation, the Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents folder
(and all its contents) appeared set to be read-only. [Under XP, this is the
Shared Documents folder.] However, I was unable to change this through
Explorer, and the command "attrib -r "C:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Documents"" returned an Access Denied error.

The solution to this is to disable Simple File Sharing, then adjust the
granular permissions. Open My Computer, and go to Tools -> Folder Options.
Scroll to the bottom of the View tab, and uncheck the Simple File Sharing
item. Now, right-click on the Shared Documents folder and look at the
Security tab. It may be heavy-handed, but I allowed Everyone to have Full
Control of that directory. This change took, and VS 2005 installed
successfully.

I haven't yet re-enabled Simple File Sharing, nor have I tried to lock down
the Shared Documents folder yet. I know it was shared and that network users
were allowed to change the documents under Simple File Sharing, but that did
not appear to fix the problem.
