Moving online servers to VS lab environment

What is the fastest, most efficient method to import a live server into a lab
environment? I looked at VSMT and we are not able to take our servers down to
run the migration and we do not have the infrastructure in place that is
required to support the VSMT tools.

If you run into HAL issues, you can run Windows repair.

Restoring the last backup to the VM could prove tricky as some files and
services may not restore properly. I would suggest running an image tool
like Livestate or Ghost (although not by M$ I believe) may be your best bet.
Another way (the long way), would be to create another VS host machine on a
laptop or another desktop and then pull the image over, shut down the second
VS host machine and move the flat files over to your production box. In
theory this sounds great, but there are many configurations that need to be
considered. (network cards, domain, workgroups, not to mention accounts and
the like)
