SCVMM - add host fails - either gives error or never completes

SCVMM 2008 R2 installed in 2008 R2 Standard 64 bit (virtual machine hosted
on Server 2008 R2 64 bit Enterprise with Hyper-V).

This is a new installation for evaluation.

[I've previously installed and used SCVMM 2008 R2 in a virtual machine
hosted by Server 2008 R2 64 bit Enterprise and was able to add hosts and
manage the hosts and VMs successfully.]

The current, problematic, instance is completely unrelated to the one that
is working - its on a different set of computers in a different domain at a
different location, different business, different AD forest.

The first attempt to add a host failed

Error (2915)
The WS-Management service cannot process the request. Object not found
on the [name of server running SCVMM - NOT the name of the host being added]
server.
(Unknown error (0x80041002))

Recommended Action
Ensure that the agent is installed and running. If the error persists,
reboot [name of server running SCVMM - NOT the name of the host being
added]and then try the operation again.

I've restarted the server running SCVMM, but the Add Host failed the same
way.

However, on the host that I was attempting to add, which is running Server
2008 R2 Enterprise Server Core, the domain user account that SCVMM is
configured to use was added to the local Administrators user group and the
VMM Agent service was installed and is in the Started stated.

Does anyone have any idea what else needs to be done to get this to work?

It's perfectly useless to know the right answer to the wrong question.
