Message:Thank you for that reply. Is it possible to get a link to those discussions
regarding running a DC in this environment? I'm going to need some backup
resources when it's time to make a recommendation.

Message:SBS 2008 is supported in a Hyper-V environment as a child partition. If you
use SBS Premium, you can use the second server as both a child and the
parent for both servers.
Discussions around SBS 2008 are covered in a public connect newsgroup.

Message:BTW, current recommendation for SBS 2008 is to not have the Parent partition
be domain joined. The team actually listened and changed the EULA to fully
support that, even when using the bundled second server (Premium only) as
the parent (using 1+1 licensing.)
Since SBS is generally a single DC network, and even when there are multiple
DCs, the SBS server itself must ALWAYS hold all FSMO roles, the usual
concerns about virtualizing a DC don't really apply. It's also almost never
shut down except to patch.

Whether SBS 2008 supports Hyper-V or not is really irrelevant here. If
you were thinking of running SBS in a virtual environment you would not
install SBS on the host computer, even if it was possible. Once you install
Hyper-V, the host (which is now the OS running in the primary partition)
should run no other role, just Hyper-V. It certainly should not be a DC.
There has been a fair bit of discussion about the merits of running
your principal/only DC in a vm. There are valid arguments against it, but
lots of people do it. A DC is special, and not really like other servers. If
a file server goes down, you can restore it to different hardware (including
a vm) and off you go. This is not really true of a DC.

Message:Thanks again for the reply. With your help I found the MS docs supporting
that and thier recommendations on what to consider.
