Newbie Question - Virtual desktops

I'm just trying to understand if Virtual Server is something that
would meet my needs at home.

We have one really good pc at home that would make a suitable
candidate for a server. We also have an additional four older
computers.

Can we create a server with virtual server and create 4 guest XP
desktops on it. Each family member could then from their older
computer, access their guest desktop on the server and have access to
a faster process etc.

This would save us on having to update computer hardware all the time
as well as make backups easier.

But if these guests are to run concurrently you also need to consider
the resources on the server machine. Each guest will need a fair chunk
of memory, say upwards of 1 Gb to run well (yes I know that XP *can*
run on 128 M but who'd want that kind of experience?).
With 4 guests you are looking at running the host on a 64 bit
operating system and with 5-6 Gb of RAM so there is also something for
the host. You can use XP-X64 (if you can find it) or Vista X64 on the
host or maybe Win2003 server X4 etc.

Then you should also be aware of the limitations of a virtual
solution:

1) No possibility to use *any* USB device at all inside of any guest
because the USB subsystem needed for that is not emulated by VS2005!
If you want USB possibilities (who does not nowadays?) you should look
elsewhere than at Microsoft virtualization, like VMWare or VirtualBox.

2) Very limited video, only a simple S3 TRIO 64 video card is emulated
and it comes with 4 Mb of video memory. Forget about any games or
movie editing! This applies to nearly all virtualization products
around, not only Microsoft's.

3) Since you want to do remote access you have to install XP *pro* as
the guests, otherwise you will not have the remote desktop
functionality needed for remote access.
The "dumb terminal" also needs to run XP pro to get the remote desktop
function.
Of course you could alternatively use some other remoting functions
that are non-Microsoft, like VNC or LogMeIn or similar. With some of
these the dumb terminal could be a Linux distro (free) which might
suit your situation.
There might be other remoting solutions around that could be used...
