shadow copies - children

Message:

I've got two hyper-v children, and I'd like this to happen:

1. shadow copies enabled in both children
2. parent backs up with WSB, capturing the children as well.

I've got a couple of issues.

First, it seems the enabling of shadow copies in the child OS's doesn't
survive a restart. That's leading me to believe perhaps it's not supposed to
be done, but I haven't found any guidance on this.

Second, when attempting to back up the parent, with shadow copies enabled in
the children, I received some errors on the host and the backup failed. I
also received an error in one of the children, but not the other.

I was careful not to have conflicts in the timing of the various shadow
copies. The parent does have the hyper-v VSS writer regedits, and shadow
copies are enabled on all parent volumes. I used kb958622, but it's not
clear to me from that kb whether the requirement to enable shadow copies is
referring to the parent, children, or both.

I've since disabled shadow copies within the child OS's, and a subsequent
backup is running and it appears it will succeed.

Are shadow copies in children acceptable practice?
Should a WSB of the parent succeed, with shadow copies enabled in the
children?

Sorry for not posting the event log errors; I'll do so later if need be.
