Hi all,

We currently have a Windows 2003 R2 64-bit host running Virtual Server 2005
R2 which hosts a variety of VMs (2003, XP & Vista). We are considering
upgrading the host to Server 2008 and had a few questions:

Does 2008 have its own newer Virtual Server?
If yes, is it free or have to be purchased in addition to Server 2008
itself?
If yes, is there an upgrade path to upgrade Virtual Server 2005 R2 VMs to
this newer Virtual Server?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Virtualization in Server 2008 is completely different. Hyper-V is a
server role, not an add-on application like Virtual Server. It will only run
on certain 64-bit hardware and needs a 64-bit OS. It is not a simple matter
to upgrade guest machines from Virtual Server to Hyper-V but it can be done.
The best idea is to remove the VMAdditions while running under Virtual
Server, then copy the .vhd file to the Hyper-V host and create a new vm
using the copied .vhd.

The first step would be to read up on Hyper-V.
