I'm running VS 2005 R2 on Windows 2008 Standard.

I am trying to set up a VM for Small Business Server 2008 but cannot install
to the VM.
I get an error "trying to install a 64 application on a CPU that is not
64bit".
However the server in question does have a 64 bit CPU as I can install Small
Business Server 2008 natively (not as a VM running on Win 2008 Server).

Anyone come across this before?

Rather than try to use Virtual Server, which won't work for SBS since it
only supports 32-bit clients, you need to enable the Hyper-V Role on the
Server 2k8 box if your CPU and BIOS support hardware virtualization. Hyper-V
will allow you to create 64-bit VMs and run SBS 2008.

If your CPU is 64-bit, but does NOT support hardware virtualization (as some
older 64-bit CPUs won't), then your best bet is VMWare.
