Hello,

It seems to be difficult to find information about the access to tape
peripherals in server virtual instance.
Can we see DLT or DAT (connected with SCSI or SAS) in virtual instance of a
server in order to use backup software (Arcserve or BE for example) ?
In my situation: I have a HP ML 370 server installed under Hyper-V server
(not complete WIndows 2008 OS) which have 2 virtual instance of Windows 2008
server.
One of the instances has the role of data server and I want that virtual
server be the backup server accessing a DLT or DAT physical engine.

Do you have any solution ?

That capability isn't built into Hyper-V, it can't pass through SCSI
devices like that.

The only way to accomplish something like it is to use iSCSI.

I have HP Windows 2008 Servers with HP Ultrium systems working perfectly
with Arcserve.
What your are saying, is that natively (without Arcserver driver or
BackupExec) WIndows 2008 wouldn't be able to manage RSM tape systems ?
I didn't try myself without third-party software but I'm interesing to know
if you experienced problem like you seems to say in your answer.

I meant Windows Server Backup does not support tape.

I assume you mean "Removable Storage Management". RSM can be used to manage
libraries of tapes, but there are no facilities to put information on a
tape, or read it from a tape as the Backup application in Server 2003 does.

I'm sorry for not being clearer. I meant the Server 2008 Backup facility
does not support using tapes, as it did in Server 2003. If you use another
application like Arcserve, and this application works on Server 2008, you
should be OK. Server 2008 RSM still appears to manage tapes as before, but
I've never used it since NTBackup always was enough for me.
