Hi Guys,

I have a few VMs working on Windows 2008 Ent with Hyper-V, such as Win2k3,
Vista, XP.

My problem ... I then installed MS Hyper-V Server (free ed) as a VM on the
same 2008 Server, the install went fine but when I logon to the VM an error
promp appears "no active network adapter found".

What am I doing wrong?

When I installed MS Hyper-V Server as a VM I only had one physical Nic in
the server, since then I added another one changed this VM to use the new
adapter but it made no difference. I even ran/added "integration services",
rebooted, no difference.

You may be asking why would I want to run Hyper-V Server as a VM on Windows
2008 Hyper-V, simple I only have one machine and wanted to get a feel for
it. I read someone's blog that suggested it was possible to run another
Hyper-V on top of Hyper-V.

You can't install the Hyper-V Server, or enable the Hyper-V Role on Windows
Server 2008, when you are running in a VM. The reason is actually quite
simple and obvious if you think about it - Hyper-V depends on the hardware
virtualization support of the underlying Intel or AMD processor. Only one
process can control that hardware virtualization in the current iterations
of CPUs, therefore a hyper-v child VM can't possibly have access to the
hardware virtualiztion - the hyper-v parent already "owns" it.

I didn't think it would work either until I read someones blog (has to be
true then :) that it could be done.

Ok so maybe I will not be able to create a VM (I already know how to do
that) but it would still be nice test connecting to it remotely and stuff
like that.

Also I think I saw that MS has a VM download of Hyper-V Server, that also
suggests it can be done.

Ok I have it working now. I had to use Legacy Network Adapter setting on the
second network adapter. I can now remotely connect using Hyper-V Manager
after turnning off the firewall on Hyper-V Server (netsh firewall set opmode
disable). I can make VMs but as you said "they will not run". If I try to
start a VM it errors "Failed to create partition."

Rather than turning off the firewall with netsh, it's better to simply
enable the appropriate set of rules to allow Hyper-v server to work
correctly.
