VS2005 was installed by committee today, since I donot have any network
experience with Windows Enterprise Server 2003.

I was walked through the WS2003 setup and I setup the WS2003 server as
LOCALHOST 192.168.0.1

When I went to defining the VM to WS2003 I chose the name of VM1
192.168.0.2

Now I am into the install of WinXp as a guest and I have gotten to the point
of being asked is this going to be part of a workgroup or domain.
Well, its going to be on the domain.

I tried LOCALHOST, LOCALHOST.COM, HOST.LOCALHOST.COM (HOST is the name of
the machine you know that shows up at the top of the
SYSTEM part of the CONTROL PANEL), VM1, VM1.COM, VM1.LOCALHOST.COM,
VM1.HOST.LOCALHOST.COM and all of them came back with the message these
were not valid domain names (that I was trying to join to...)

What am I doing wrong???????

Also, can I install VM Additions after I get the guest XP machine up and
running?

Assuming the network adapter for your virtual machine was set to share the
host NIC, this is no different than installing a new machine on your
network. Enter the same domain name you use for your other servers and
workstations. If this particular VM is not going to be in your domain them
set it to use a workgroup instead. You got the error because none of those
domain names were in use by a domain controller on your network.

When you've finished setting up the OS on the virtual machine, then you can
add the VM additions from the Virtual Server admin page.

You didn't create a domain when you installed your Windows Server 2003
computer. All you've done is to install the operating system. That
doesn't create a domain.
This isn't a Virtual Server question, it is an Active Directory
question. You need to run dcpromo on your Windows Server 2003 computer
to create the domain. Read the online help for Windows Server 2003, and
if you continue to have trouble, you should post to one of the Active
Directory news groups.

You're talking about TCP/IP Domain name, Paul is talking about Windows
Domain, as in AD. Two different concepts.

There are no other machines on the network. I have just done the WS2003
install, network definition, and the VM install and network definition. All
of this
is behind a private network router and does not connect to the INTERNET.
So, I don't have any predicate domain names, for servers or clients. I
think I know what you are going to ask next and that is why not just do the
workgroup thing. I am having to set up "real world" internet environment so
that I can install SAS IOM Bridge and I haven't got this far yet, but I will
be installing Oracle on the second VM WinXP guest and the two will be
talking together over SAS IOM which uses the IP backbone.

If this particular VM is not going to be in your domain them

But we did set up on the WS2003 as a domain controller...so wouldn't it be
the domain controller for the network? That is the domain named LOCALHOST.

list of all of the domain names that I felt were or could have been
applicable but obviously they were not, because I do not understand why when

domain that clients joined.

You can't do anything with the Additions while the guest is in a saved
state.

You haven't created an Active Directory domain, all you've done is
create a DNS domain, and that isn't what the XP box is looking to join.

Again, this is not a Virtual Server issue. You really need to do some
research on Active Directory, what it is, and how to set it up. This is
not the correct place to do that research. There is lots of information
on AD in the help for Windows Server 2003, on Microsoft's web site as
well, and if you continue to have trouble with this, one or more of the
Active Directory news groups. Not here.
