I created a windows 2003 server virtual machine in hyper v. The virtual
network adapter is missing in the virtual machine, If I open device manager
it shows an ethernet adapeter not configured (! driver missing). How can I
set the a virtual network adapter to connect the vm to my external network.

The best idea is to upgrade Server 2003 to SP2, then install the
imtegration components. This will load the driver for the synthetic NIC
driver used by Hyper-V.

Without the ICs you will need to install a legacy network adapter. This is
the adapter used in VPC/Virtual Server.
