I have loaded XP in its own virtual space using MS virtual server.
I'd like to infect it with Malware and try to clean it. Will the
infection spread to my host machine or should it stay only on the
virtual machine? The malware I'm going to run on the virtual server
is either antivirus 2009 or antivirus xp 2008, I think there similar.

With most variants of this Malwarebytes Anti-Malware will remove this quite
easily. There are some variants that install a very nasty root kit and alter
many of the Windows Services executables. If Malwarebytes doesn't remove it
the only cure I've found is a re-image. It can be cleaned by deleting the
root kit from a live Linux CD then using the system file checker to replace
the infected executables but it's much quicker and safer to flatten the
system if you have one of the nasty variants.

It shouldn't spread to the host machine, as I recall the 2 malware products
you are looking at get installed when you access an infected web site. For
extra peace of mind, turn off the nics on the Virtual Machine so it can't
actually get out onto your network or possible pull down other infections.

We've been fighting with those infections on our network, we tend to just
re-image the workstation, since none of the cleanups we've tried have given
us any confidence that the virus is actually removed.

You can muck up the guest OS all you want with Malware and it won't hurt the
Host OS. Test Software products like what you are doing is one of the
advantages of using Virtual Products.

The VM should be isolated from the host and the host's network
connection, otherwise any malware/virus infection could easily spread.
