Parallel Port Settings?

My host is Vista64 SP1.
I am using Virtual Server 1.1.629.0 R2 SP1
I have an ALPS 5000 printer that does not have VISTA drivers.
I have a virtual XP Professional SP3 machine with the ALPS 2.2.4 drivers
installed. I have attached the parallel port to this machine.
When I print the print dialog says the printer is not responding.
I have not found any place to change or set parallel port settings, where
can I look?

Not sure I can help further; I tried to print to my HP 660C (parallel port)
from an XP virtual machine without success - XP spooled the print, said it
was printing and deleted the print (all normal), but nothing appeared on the
printer.

The host is Vista X64 SP1 using Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1, The guest is XP
SP3.

I know that the HP 660C and the parallel port (on motherboard) are working
because I could print to it successfully from the Vista host before trying
to print from the XP guest.

According to
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/virtualserver/2005/proddocs/vs_deploy_setupprinters.mspx?mfr=true
and http://support.microsoft.com/kb/867587:

a. the parallel port on the host must be the "default" - I/O address
378-37F - for LPT1
b. the host OS must not have already "captured" the port - this essentially
means you have to stop the Print Spooler service on the host - you probably
need to set the Print Spooler start type to Disabled and restart the host

Until I did b. I got an error in the Virtual Server Event Log that the port
could not attached because it was not available - already in use.

Also, you need to restart the guest after changing the LPT1 setting in the
guest VM Properties from None to Host LPT1.

Possible alternatives
1. if you have another computer (even an old one about to be recycled),
would be to attach your printer to the old computer and printing over the
network from the guest VM
2. get a network printer box (often called a "Print Server") hat has a
parallel connection (e.g. an HP JetDirect) - you should be able to print to
this by creating a Standard TCP/IP Port in the Add Printer Wizard (see
http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/Printing%20to%20Print%20Server%20device.htm
for details).

I cycled through all of these settings and was unable to get a response from
the printer. The printer works properly when connected directly to an XP
machine.
