I installed a guest OS of XP on a WinSrv 2008 host. At first, I had the
display set to 1152 x 864, the highest resolution that supported 32
bit color. Then I installed SP 3, all stayed the same. When I then
installed Integration Services (which requires SP 3), now the display
properties only support 16 bit color at any resolution. It's using VMBus
Video Device.

That's a real step-down - can I do anything about that?

As a general rule, the expectation is that most child partitions (a more
accurate term in the Hyper-V world than guest) will be server class
machines, where high resolution is less of an issue. And that most
connections to the VMs will be via RDP. At least that's the rationale that I
was given. Personally, I wish they'd at least given us a choice. :(
