virtual server 2005 R2 on windows server 2003 R2 SP2

- I can access the site using the IP address (prompted to login -
successful)
- I can *not* access the site using the unqualified host name
- when using FQDN I do get prompted to log in but authentication fails?

whats going on?

- machine is not a domain member
- an 'A' record was manually created in dns domain just so I could use the
name instead of IP
- both unqualified and FQDN's resolve fine. I can ping using both
sucessfully. All this is from the vs host machine, locally.

whoops.. and the error is an http 500 internal server error when trying to
connect via unqualified host name. Its an auth failure (after trying to log
on with known good account info) when trying to access via FQDN. Works just
fine when accessing via IP.

any input would be appreciated.
