Which versions of server and client are recommended for test of Win32 apps?

For testing purposes I need to simulate the behavior of 160 users on 4
Citrix servers running a Win32 app that connects to a SQL server. So
basically I need to be able to start 160 instances of the 32bit app, but I
only have one server to work as application server / Citrix server. (Quad
core Xeon with 16 gb ram)

I plan to install Win Server x64 with 4 virtual Windows XP clients each
running 40 instances of the app. I plan to dedicate one of the cores to each
of the virtual clients and 3 gb ram. This enables me to simulate scalability
with 1 to 4 Citrix Servers - each with 40 instances of the app and the same
processing power for each user. I know it is not exact simulation, but I
guess running the app 40 times in WinXP is less demanding than having 40
full user sessions on a Citrix server.

But is the above an ok approach? And is it ok to use x64 versions of Windows
Server and Virtual Server but only 32bit of XP? Anything else I should
consider? Please note, that the actual app is 32bit and is unable to take
advantage of multiple cores.

Thanks in advance

Peter
