Virtual Machine Status = Turning on.. but VM screen is blankSource: microsoft.public.virtualserver Sent: 04/23/2008 From: Fred Luhm Message:We have a problem as follows:
After a fresh host reboot, the VM will boot up no problem as well.
Everything is fine at this time, and the VM is running.
However, if we need to reboot the VM, upon reboot, it will not come up. It
goes down.. seems to shut Windows all the way down.., but get's stuck there.
On the VM Admin website, the VM status = Turning On.
But, we are stuck... and the shut down, reset, and other options are not
available.
The only method we can use to get the VM online again, is to reboot the host
server..
Any tips on how can I diagnose this issue, to determine, and re-configure
the parameters that are causing the VM guest to hang on the reboot? The host
server is not very busy at all.. but the VM guest still will not properly
reboot...
Any help is greatly appreciated.
There are no error type log entries in the Virtual Server Event log, or any
errors in the system log, etc. Nothing related to disk errors, etc. Very
strange.

What is your guest, host combination? How have you installed the VM (n/
w, iso image?), are you seeing this in multiple systems? What is the
Virtual Server version you are running?

for you:
Are the VM Additions installed in the Guest system? Latest ones?
What is the hardware configuration? RAM / Procs / Disk?
Have you checked the logs in the Guest system or just in the Host? Check
the Guest as well...
Have you tried re-starting the Guest in "Safe Mode" or getting any debug
info?
Does this differ when you shut down the Guest OS completely and turn it off
(rather than just rebooting)?

Sent: 04/26/2008 From: Fred Luhm Message:Hello. Thank you both for your responses. Below each of your questions, I
have provided additional information.
Overall host is as follows:
Win2003 Standard Server, SP1. VSS 2005 with latest service pack. Issue
also happened before latest SP as well. Very basic setup, and similar to
approx 5 other deployments of the same nature.
On the HOST, we only have a single VM guest running, which is also a Win2003
Standard VM, used for a domain controller.
I believe what I need to understand, is how to know what resource the VM
feels is the issue. It should not be RAM or CPU, as there is plenty that I
can see. I have limited CPU for the VM to only 50% in VS server resources
configurations.
I tend to believe it is somehow disk file related, but I cannot tell how to
know for sure. I have checked the VM disk file, using the 'Inspect' option,
and everything looks OK. It just seems as if the disk file is not able to be
loaded, but only in scenarios where the VM file is already been used, and it
then shutdown / Turned on, or when rebooted. But, from fresh reboot, it's OK.
Yes, latest VM additions.
HOST is a good server (HPDL380 G4, 1 CPU, RAID5, 3GB RAM)
Yes, checking all logs on host, and guest. No indication of any issues at
all.
Guest never get's far enough to choose Safe Mode or other. Screen is just
blank after windows shuts down. Never see VM BIOS, or anything.
Good point. I just tried this, and the result is the same. It will
properly shutdown, but when I use the 'Turn on' option, the admin web page
just sits there, and the VM never turns on. Actually, when I try it this
way, the admin website even becomes non-usable, as the mouse hourglass just
sits there spinning.
Is there a debug log for VSS, to show me what portion of the VM startup in
not proceeding?

Sent: 04/26/2008 From: Fred Luhm Message:Hello. One more comment on the issue.
When I do a regular 'Shutdown' of the VM guest, it will shutdown OK.
However, when I use the 'Turn On' for the VM Guest, the entire host get's
upset, and seems to slow up, become very bogged down, even though the CPU and
RAM is idle, and low. After approx 5 minutes, I get a CGI timeout on the
Admin VS website. From there, after approx another few minutes, the host
becomes responsive again.
I have tried disabling Anti-Virus, and backup software as well. Behaviors
still appear to be the same. Very odd.

Have you tried to use VMRC+ for VS2005 admin instead of the website?
If you do then you can at least rule out problems inside the IIS
server on the host. Why use a website when there is a *real*
management program?

VMRC+ is one part... The problem looks vaguely similar, can you can
try installing this patch:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941125
and check if there is any change in behavior.
