Hi,

I find that some of my virtual machines do not produce any sound. For those
that fail, I find when I click the Advance button in "Sounds and Audio
Devices Properties", I get a pop-up windows that states "DirectSound
settings not available". These failing guests are both Windows 2003
Enterprise Editions running under Windows 2003 Enterprise Editions x64
hosts. I've a working guest Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition under an XP
host.

The Windows 2003 Enterprise Editions x64 hosts also have Vista guests and
they have no problem.

Any idea how this is fixed?

Hi Steve,

Yes, I understand that Virtual Server 2005 R2 does not include an emulated
sound card. And as expected, I find that when I use VM Remote Client or VM
Administratrion Website, sound will not play from any guest machine.

All well and good.

However, if I use Remote Desktop Connection to access the guest machines,
sound is generally available on most of my guest machines.

Guests that have sound are:

Win XP
Win 2003 Server #1
Vista #1
Vista #2

Guest that don't have sound are:

Win 2003 Server #2
Win 2003 Server #3

So, I don't know what magic is going on underneth the covers, but I do know
that sound works fine on most of my virtual guest machines when accessed via
terminal services (such as Remote Desktop).

I suspect that if you try accessing your guest via terminal services, you
may find that sound works for you also.
