I',m trying to move a old server our deveolpers us to virtual server, the
machine is old P3 and I cannot get it to PXE boot so the Virtual server
migration kit won't work.

I have been trying to use ASR to move the server, it finds the floppy and
runs setup in ASR mode but I cannot access my backup either across the
network or from a external usb drive. I've created a ISO of the backup and
mounted it as a CD image but it still will not find it. HELP

This blog use VMWare but the process should work with VPC as well and the
virtualized CD-ROM should be recognised when the NTBackup process will start
as described in this blog.

However, if this doesn't work (I don't know as I never used ASR myself),
then you will have to use another method to access your backup. If you have
lot of space (either on your local hard drive or an external USB, Firewire
or eSata drive for example); the easiest way is simply to create a blank VHD
using a VM that is already installed and working and copy your backup onto
it. You can also use a software like WinImage or the VHDMount (that come
with Virtual Server 2005 R2) to write to the VHD if you don't have a running
VM at hand. After that, all you have to do is to attach this VHD (with the
backup on it) as a second (virtualized) hard drive on the VM to which you
intend to make the restore process.

If you don't have enough hard drive space to do this, then you have other
solutions. You can find most of these by searching this newsgroup with
Google using P2V (Physical to Virtual migration) as the keyword.
