Trouble browsing via UNC between VMware host and VM

Message:

Recently, after several Microsoft updates, I lost the ability to
browse using either \\servername, or via my network places, between
the VM host (EAST2) and tthe VM itself (EAST3). These are new
installs
on new machines, and had been browsing fine beforehand

The VMware server console version is 1.0.1-build 29996

Both the host and the VM can browse to either the domain controller
(EAST1), or any workstation on this small (2 physical servers, 1
virtual, 8 workstations) All three servers are running server 2003 R2
(5.2.3790-SP2); the host and VM recently installed SP 2 (I believe
the
day the failure began.)

Pinging by either name or IP works fine. Each server (either EAST2 or
EAST3) can see the other in My Network Places, but cannot browse by
UNC or by clicking on it in the GUI. All three servers have FALSE for
the registry entry of ISDOMAINMASTER, but that is true in my other
network as well (the host runs Server 2003, the VM runs 2000 Server
in
that environment, though) and there are no problems.

The ethernet connection is bridged, if that is informative.

This is inconvenient, at the least, as EAST3 is my WSUS server, and
EAST2 is my Exchange server, but I worry most that is could indicate
a
more insidious problem.

I sure hope someone well versed in this can help. My experience with
VMware is limited, but it is such a welcome tool.

Thanks,

Bill Watkins
