Dumb Question - Memory problem on Dell 1850

I think this is more of an operating system question but if anyone can
chime in I would appreciate it.

I am running MS VS2005 on a Dell PE 1850 with 4GB of memory (upgrading
to 12GB next week). For some reason the OS and VS2005 and msinfo32
all are reporting 3GB of memory. When I look at the Dell Open Manage
tool it shows 4GB (4 x 1GB DIMMs). Any ideas why this is happening?

Probably because you don't use a 64 bit OS. On a 32 bit system, the maximum
available memory is usually around 2.8 to 3.2 Gigs, depending on the size of
the video memory. (The more video memory you have, the less available you
have for the OS.)
