Inter process communication in between host and VMs

Hi

I'm wondering if there are any possibilities for inter-process communication
in between apps running on the host and the VMs themselves, rather than
going through the network. I guess the main application for this would be to
push and pull some files to/from a VM. Is there, or is Microsoft planning,
any such facilities other than having to resort to loading an image file,
write a file to it, unload it, and have a similar process on the other end
(with no communicaiton in between, polling seems to be the only solution and
that quite, eh, ineffective). Using virtual COM ports is also darned ugly
and constraining.

I understand security considerations have lead to the elimination of the
"run program on a virtual machine" feature, but considering that the
interface to manage VMs requires authentication and using that same
authentication a user could also simply connect to the VM management service
and wreak havoc, I'd much welcome to have some means to directly communicate
with VMs.

Regards
Stephan
