A solution for Deploy problem (bmpart.exe returning c000003a)

While migrating 3 servers to virtual environments I ran into the same
problem. All servers are huge old boxes with tons of unused, embedded SCSI
controllers. After running the capture and the CreateVM jobs sucessfully,
the deployVM would fail on the "get geometry" job where it runs
"/bmonitor/bmpart.exe \device\hardisk0 /g". It would fail with this error
message:

The requested device/partition is in-accessible. The device/partition could
be corrupt or invaild.

After banging my head for a while I found the fix. After running the
CreateVM job, I needed to go into the newly created VM's settings and change
the harddisk from being attached to SCSI 0:0 and attach it, instead to the
Primary Channel(0). After that it worked like a charm!!!

The volumes on the physical server were attached to a RAID array. That
might have been a reason. Anyway, I fully expected the server to be
unbootable after I ran the deployVM using this altered configuration since I
figured what I had done was the equivilent of attaching what was a SCSI drive
to an IDE adapter. Obviously I don't fully understand what's happening under
the covers because it all worked! (Obviously the VSMT didn't fully
understand what was going on either since it originally attached it to a
virtual SCSI adapter (0:0)). Also, I removed the 2 virtual scsi adapters
that createVM created since niether were being used any longer.

Hope that helps someone else out there.

You know... VMWare requires customers who purchase their P2V solution (yes,
I said purchase) to go through their VMWare training course first. If theirs
is as complicated as VSMT, then I completely understand why. That said, VSMT
is still a really cool tool.
