Ethernet Network performance - real vs virtual

Hi there

Is there any specific way you guys configure your real and virtual Ethernet
NICs in Virtual Server 2005? I have a test server set up here with two NICs,
one connected to the core switch with an IP address/client for MS Networks
etc, and the other connected to the DMZ switch with no IP address. Both have
Virtual Machine Networking Services enabled.

The switch ports are all set to 100/Full (not auto) and I have set the host
server NICs to run in 100/Full mode as well. The guest server connected to
the core switch NIC seems to run fine, but the guest server connected to the
DMZ switch seems much slower for file transfers and remote desktop, compared
to our other DMZ servers. Neither changing the virtual 21140 NIC properties
to 100/Full or assigning full network properties (IP address, etc) to the
host server NIC seem to make it run any faster.

Any ideas? Do the speed/duplex settings on virtual NICs have any impact on
the real world or not? Do all host NICs need to be configured with IP etc for
the guest servers to use them effectively?

Thanks

Adam White
