linked virtual hard disk problems

We added a new disk to our virtual server host. It's a SATA drive, and is
the only drive on that particular RAID controller. The RAID controller can
see the drive.

I'm trying to create a linked VHD to that new disk. I go to the virtual
server mgmt site, and add a new Virtual Disk (of type "Linked virtual hard
disk"). I give it a path to save the VHD, and select "\\.\PHYSICALDRIVE1 -
114.46GB - Unmounted" as the disk to link to. I click OK, and get no error
messages.

However, when I try to add that new VHD to an existing virtual machine, I
get this error in the ""FooMachine" Virtual Hard Disk Properties" page:

"The hard drive settings could not be saved. The parameter is incorrect."

Then, on the Master Status page I see this error in the log:
"The virtual hard disk "D:\VirtualMachines\LinkedDisks\DotNetBuilder-G.vhd"
of "DotNetBuilder" is either a linked virtual hard disk, or a differencing
virtual hard disk to a linked virtual hard disk. A virtual machine cannot use
these type of virtual hard disks. Please use virtual hard disk images that
are not connected to the host disk."

I've tried this both where the new drive is and is not mounted and formatted
by the host OS. Same results both ways.

What do I need to do in order to link a virtual hard disk to a physical hard
disk, and use it in a virtual machine?

My host OS is WIN2003, and the guest OS is Win2k server.
