I have VPC version 7 for Mac that has never worked properly. It has been uninstalled and sitting on my shelf of a couple of years now. Tomorrow, I take possession of a new INTEL Mac and want to use the registered version of XP that came with my VPC so that I can use it to run Bootcamp and NOT have to buy yet another copy of windows. I paid for it and I figure I might as well get SOME usefullness out of a useless program. VPC came with 3 disks, 2 installs and a "white" disk. I want to know which of those disks actually contains the Windows XP HOME on it without having to insert each disk in order to find out. Does anyone know off hand which that is? and any reason to imagine why my registered version of XP that came with it couldn't be used in this way? Let me know ASAP via my email address as I joined the forum just for this purpose and probably couldn't navigate here again if my life depended on it. PS. I had to go this route because (of course) everytime I tried to use direct Online help, it constantly said it had a problem with my product key. Email= (email address - cut out).

TIP: Keep that VPC 7 and your PPC Mac. You should solve the install of
your VPC 7 WinXP on it FIRST!
The Windows XP that came with your VPC 7, can only be used with VPC 7 on
your PPC Mac.

I have VPC 7 WinXP Pro on my G4/1.25 OS X.4.11. It works very well,
although slowly.

An option for Windows on your Intel Mac would be to install the public
Windows 7 RC1 under Parallels.
Another approach would be to install the same Windows 7 using Bootcamp,
but then your Mac becomes as exposed to malware as any Windows PC- I
don't recommend this approach.

I have the same version of Virtual PC. I didn't look for this particular way
of reusing the license, but I am also interested... So, I will check, but
this takes time, which I don't have at the moment.

If you are patient I will call back later (I will need a few weeks at least)

My hardware is a Power Mac G5 @ 2.0 GHz (dual core, 2005) and a ThinkPad
R51, Pentium-M (Centrino) @ 1.7 GHz (2004).

The Windows XP Home inside of Virtual PC is definitely an OEM version, so it
will need an activation anyway. I don't know if Microsoft will restrict this
though. You might be lucky and they let you activate it.
I will try to get it it running on my ThinkPad. If this works, you could
install it everywhere you want. Off course you need to be in accordance with
the license restrictions - or at least that part, that is valid in your
country. The OEM part of the license (to use Windows only with the (virtual)
computer with which is was originally purchased) isn't valid in most
countries, at least not in Germany and Austria.

Although I'm unfamiliar with Parallels Desktop I would also recommend it for
an Intel-based Mac. It features integration with a "real" copy of Windows
(via Boot Camp) into the Mac OS X desktop, so you could be running your
Windows programs in Mac OS X like alongside to your Mac programs. And for the
rare occasion that you need the real Windows (for 3D games for example) you
could start it with Boot Camp. Sounds great, doesn't it?

All you need now is a working installation CD of Windows XP Home, to install
it using Boot Camp (unlimited in every way - boot into Windows or use it
virtually inside Mac OS X with Parallels) or inside of a VM (limited, can
only be used inside Mac OS X) - Parallels or VmWare.

I don't know for your country, but in Germany and Austria it is legal to get
a copy of Windows XP Home - meaning you copy a CD of a friend or so - and use
your own license/product key to validate that copy. It you look closely into
the Microsoft Windows EULA you'll find that you only have the right to use
the software. That also means, all you really need in order to be legal is
the license i.e. product key, not the original Windows installation CD. For
the installation it is legal to use copied media.

No choice, but to buy a retail version. I had the same problem.

Eventually I chose to buy the 64 bit version of Vista and I run it on vmWare
Fusion 2. It works like a charm.

If you have to have XP, here is a link to Newegg.com where they sell it

I've been looking at the contents of the white CD and found out, it only
contains the i386 folder, which is used when Windows requests the original
installation media to install additional drivers or additional Windows
software.

Windows XP cannot be installed from this CD.

For me it looks like there is only ONE way to get this very version of XP on
a real physical machine: a partition image program!

I haven't tried it out yet. But, I think that you will need the following:
1.) A Power Mac (hope you still have one -- or access to it)
2.) Virtual PC/Windows bundle
3.) A partition imaging software for Windows (or one that can make windows
partition images, but is not for Windows)
3.a.) This partition image software must be able to boot from CD-ROM to make
images and to recover partitions from images

These are the steps I think are necessary:
1.) Install Virtual PC on a Power Mac.
2.) Create a new virtual hard disk that will be used for the partition image.
3.) Boot the virtual Windows XP VM with a bootable CD-ROM image of the
imaging software.
4.) Make a partition image of the virtual first partition (the one on which
Windows XP is installed) and put the image files on the second disk (the one
you created in step 2).
5.) Boot into the virtual Windows XP and copy the image files (from step 4)
from the second virtual disk (created in step 2) onto a real physical media,
such as a real HDD, but better an external HDD (USB, FireWire).

STEPS 1-5 are inside of Virtual PC,
now STEPS 6-9 on a real Mac Pro:
6.) Boot-up your Mac Pro with Mac OS X and prepare the Windows paritions.
You will need at least one for Windows XP itself; might be that you need an
additional FAT32 partition (see step 8).
7.) Boot this very same partition image software on your new Mac Pro (like
you did in VPC, step 3; but now "real").
8.) Make sure you can access the external USB disk (connect it before the
boot-up) or copy the image files onto your hard disk - on a FAT32 partition!
Don't use the Mac OS X HFS+ partition, as the partition image program won't
be able to read from there.
9.) Restore Windows XP on a prepared/existing partition on your hard disk.

Watch out! Windows and DOS based programs don't know about EFI partitions.
You will have to make the partitioning from within Mac OS X. Don't use
Bootcamp, use the manual method via the command shell.

Now you can restore any partition from Windows/DOS based programs without
having to repartition (which will cause EFI partition errors).

You can see, this is quite a procedure. But once you're done, you will have
a legal working Windows XP installation on a Mac Pro.

You might still consider the second option: copy an installation CD-ROM of
Windows XP Home, or borrow it, and install it using YOUR product key -- the
one you got together with Virtual PC.
This should be much much easier.

Note though, that you'll have to activate Windows XP Home in both cases
(probably, don't know about the second case).

Thinking about what I suggested... IT WON'T WORK.

I totally forgot about the Mac Pro. Bootcamp installs some drivers and stuff
to Windows XP that makes it work on the Mac. The partition image lacks these
drivers.

You could install these drivers afterwards, if Windows can access the hard
drive. If it doesn't (likely, if there is a SATA adapter used in the Mac,
which it is, I think) you won't be able to boot this Windows - and you won't
be able to install the lacking driver there. You would have to install the
drivers before you make an image - in Virtual PC.

The other problem is that there will be no way to boot into this Windows XP,
because there is no bootloader or anythink alike installed.

Start-up your Power Mac. Start Virtual PC and start Windows XP.

Inside your virtual Windows XP:

1. Download c't Slipstreamer.
Use your favorite internet search engine, enter "c't Slipstreamer".
Download it from a URI that starts with "http://www.heise.de" ONLY!!!
BEWARE: the software is in GERMAN language!

2. Unpack the ZIP archive 0603-202.zip into a suitable folder.
You don't need special software for that, just double-click the ZIP
file.

3. Download Windows XP Service Pack 3.
Use your favorite internet search engine, enter "Windows Service Pack
3 download".
For the english version the filename should be
"WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe".

4. Insert the white CD-ROM labled "Additional Windows System Files".
(optional) If you check the contents of the disc you will see it only
contains the folder "i386".

5. Start c't Slipstreamer.
Do this by double-clicking on slipstreamer.exe in the folder you
unpacked it to.

6. Fill out the required fields.
"Installationsdateien" --> "Installation files" is the path to your
CD-ROM driver (the one from step 4).
"Zielordner" --> "Target folder" is a temporary path with sufficiant
free space.
"Service Pack" [ENABLED] is the network installation file of Windows
Service Pack 3 (see step 3).
"OEM-Dateien mit SP-Dateien Ã¼berschreiben" --> "overwrite OEM files
with files from the service pack" [ENABLED]
select YOUR Windows XP version [XP Home *or* XP Professional] -- your
product key will only work with the correct version!

7. Click "Start" and be patient.
After the integration of the service pack you will have to click "Ok."
After the creation of the ISO CD-ROM image c't Slipstreamer is
finished, click "Ok."

You should see text messages like this:

Windows XP.
you can install it now on *ONE* computer of your choice. Use the product
key you got with Virtual PC.

You are allowed to use Windows XP with ONE COMPUTER only! Do not install it
on more computers as this is illegal by the license terms of the Microsoft
Windows EULA!
If you have purchased Virtual PC with Windows XP Professional you are
allowed to install a copy of Windows XP Professional on ONE physical computer
as well as up to three virtual machines. This is NOT applicable to Windows XP
Home!

i386 folder off the CD. That works too.

Neither solution is actually legal though (depending where you live) but

releases can be sold sperately in these countries, regardless what the
original license by Microsoft states.

That is one reason why the c't Slipstreamer is legal in Germany and Austria
- you are allowed to "reconstruct" an installable version of the very Windows
operating system you already have.

I'm not 100% sure anymore how this is applicable to a software (VPC) that
bundles another software (the operating system, Windows XP).

So, you may be right and this is illegal.

BTW, the procedure may be complicated and a lot of work, but you only have
to do this once.

The way with the boot floppy disk is fine too, but you need a working CD-ROM
driver for that. Or you copy the i386 folder to the harddrive beforehand and
boot the DOS floppy then, so you can access the i386 folder and its files
right away.
