Windows Virtual PC on Windows 7 very slow network accessSource: microsoft.public.virtualpc Sent: 10/14/2009 From: "John Daintree" <(email address - cut out)> Message:Hello All,
I'm running Windows Virtual PC on Windows 7 RTM. (4 cores, 64 bit, 8G RAM)
I've created an XP VM but the VM's network performance back to the host
machine is really slow. A similar VM on an XP host (via Virtual PC 2007)
performs much better network-wise (orders of magnitude better probably).
I'm not running this in "XP mode" (at least I don't think I am), I just want
a VM to test software installs on.
I've installed the "Integration features". I dunno what else to pursue.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
John.

OK, worked around it, uninstalled Windows Virtual PC (y'know , the new
Windows 7 one), and installed Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 (y'know, the old
one). This one seems to work and does all I need.
Don't get me started....

Argh! I do appreciate hearing this, as I'm about to go down that path.
So (anyone) what does the new one offer, other than USB support, that I'd be losing?

For my use though, I'm just testing software builds and installations, so I
don't need any of that "new" stuff.

That's somewhat intriguing. What are you doing, maximizing the app within the VM?
Any links that I could use to get a better idea about this feature?

Sent: 10/26/2009 From: "John Daintree" <(email address - cut out)> Message:Hi Karl,
I don't think I'm doing anything unusual. I start the VM, which is a fairly
"clean" XP installation, and then launch our install bootstrapper , which is
just a dialog based (so not full screen) installer. The bootstrap binary is
located on our local network. It takes an age for the install GUI to show,
and then installing the MSIs (also on the network drive) takes even longer.
I'm assuming an update to Windows 7 will fix this, but I'll probably not
notice now that I've un-installed Windows Virtual PC.
If I stumble across anythng online I'll post it here.

Sent: 11/24/2009 From: ssarthur2 Message:The new one also offers improved drive mapping. I am finding it easier to
move files in and out of the VM using the mapped drives.
However, they took away the capability to simply drag files in and out of
the VM. This feature was buggy in VPC 2007, but why not fix it instead of
taking it away?
Also, I am having problem with Windows VPC not responding. Occasionally,
the VM seems to simply stop responding and I will have to sit and wait for 3
- 4 seconds for it to come back. This will drive me back to VPC 2007, if I
can't find a work around. If there is a work-around, it is worth staying on
WVPC, in my opinion.

I like that, yeah.
Hmmmm, yeah, that is a real WTF, isn't it?
I have one that I can't get the Integration Components installed in,
and it's just a giant steaming pile of y'knowwhat, at the moment. I'm
not sure what to do to get that one going.
But otherwise, it seems to be kinda sorta okay. Oh, and a Win95 VM is
popping a new error I haven't seen before, either. Ei yi yi..

I did not know that. Interesting!
(Doesn't mean I didn't always *want* to use drag/drop with RDP... <g>)
