I just discovered that my Lenovo laptop does have a bios option tu turn
on hardware-assisted virtualization (but was disabled). Is there any
problems using it? Any negative effects when using it when not running
virtualization software? There must be some reason why it is disabled by
default.

Also how much does it effect performance when running VMs? Marginal or
will I really notice any difference? Well guess I will just go and turn
it on to see :-).

Depends. Once you've got the VM Additions installed in a guest
there's no difference.
Installing a VM, running VMs without Additions (Linux OSes), or
without optimization (Win7) you should see a significant and noticable
performance increase.
