I have been attempting to get a 2008 64 bit server running on a 32 bit Vista
client without success. My virtual Server Version is 1.1.603.0 EE R2 SP1.

I get the message:

Info: Attempting to load a 64-bit application, however this cpu is not
compatible with 64-bit mode.

I heard there was a fix to do this but have been unable to find it. Is
anyone aware of this fix and/or where the info is available for it?

Virtual Server doesn't support 64-bit guests.

There is no fix with Virtual Server, you would have to use another
product like VMWare Workstation and your hardware would have to be
just right for that to work.

This isn't a "fix" - there's nothing broken. It's simply the way the
software was designed. And I consider it extremely unlikely that Virtual
Server will ever change. It _is_ possible that Virtual PC (or some successor
client virtualization program from MS) will have full 64-bit client
functionality. But no announcements have been made on that front at all. And
even if it were to support 64-bit guests, I'd be astonished if it did so on
a 32-bit host.

I can think of lots of reasons why not, and yes, I know that VMWare does it.
But I'll stand by my statement - I'd be astonished if it supports 64-bit
guests on a 32-bit host OS.

Update KB948515.msp for Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 states that Small
Business Server 2008 (not just 2003) is a supported guest OS bundle. SBS 2008
is a 64-bit bundle.

I get the same message "Attempting to load a 64-bit application, however
this cpu is not compatible with 64-bit mode.". I get it that up to this point
only 32-bit OSs were supported as a guest, but with it specifically including
SBS 2008 in the update I assumed that things changed.

I want to virtualize SBS 2008 for SharePoint design and development and
researched virtualization options using MS technology and this update was
perfect.

Why doesn't SBS 2008 install if the update supports it?

I am on a machine that is certified for Vista. I would certainly like to try
installing Windows Server on the machine if it probably will install and work
well, then install Hyper-V and use that. Should Windows Server install well
on a machine that Vista installs on? I've never tried.

I don't see SBS 2008 listed there, and I can tell you definitively that
Virtual Server does not support any x64 OS as a guest. If you want x64
guest support you need to use Hyper-V.
