Hi

I'm trying to install Windows 7 into a virtual machine.

I downloaded the 64 bit version because I have a 64 bit machine, and the
host is 64 bit Vista.

However, as soon as the installation starts, I get a message saying
"attempting to load a 64 bit app but this CPU is not compatible with 64 bit
mode"

Does this mean I can only run 32 bit in virtual mode?

VPC only runs 32 bit OSes. Period. Does not matter what your host is.
Get the 32 bit version.

Exactly, Virtual PC can only run 32-bit guests. (or 16-bit)
