I have installed VPC to run a game that is hanging in Vista. And, to learn
some new stuff on the computer (this seemed interesting). Anyway, I have VPC
07 (with XP Pro), installed the additions and installed the game. When I put
the CD in the drive (it is using my physical drive E) it says: "Please insert
the correct CD-ROM, select OK and restart application". The correct CD is in
the drive, although VPC calls it drive D. Why doesn't it think the correct
game disk is in there? The disk works fine in my old XP desktop. I also
noticed in the VPC console settings, under display, it won't let me change
anything until I install the additions...which are installed...

Some settings cannot be changed while the guest OS is running. Just
like you cannot change your video adapter while your host OS is running,
you also have to turn off the guest OS to make critical hardware
changes, like for the display. So shutdown the guest OS and then change
the VM's settings.

Game companies do!! The perfect current exampe, EA's Spore and Mass
Effect.
OS CDs don't have copy protection schemes on them. Don't blame VPC,
blame game companies that use StarForce, SecureROM, etc to protect
their discs because they don't trust you.

An ISO won't work, you're doing exactly what the game company doesn't
want you to do. To the games copy protection, the virtual CD drive
looks just like a copied CD or ISO.

Back when VPC was made by Connectix, the engineers did a lot of extra
work to make games with copy protection work under VPC, but I doubt
this will be a high priority for MS.

you launch the VPC Console as administrator. (Right click on the VPC

Unless the "game" you intend to play inside a VM is something very basic
and very low-resource intensive, like a card playing game or crosswords,

to load without the bootstrap code itself requiring an OS. GAG is
available for free from Sourceforge.net. You create another partition
on your hard disk, make it the active one, do the OS install there, and
use GAG to switch between the OS partitions.

Ok, I've tried to respond four times now...

Thanks both, I found my error listed in another thread - you were right, I
had to shut donw the window to fix the options in just the VPC console.

I got the disk to work by ejecting and reinserting, then VPC read the disk
and saw that it was there - I had been trying to use it while it was
previously inserted, and hadn't allowed VPC to see it.

Thank you for responding to my multitude of emails - not sure what was going
on, but when I would sign back in, none of the posts beyond the first three
were showing up, so I kept trying to post!

I did find that the disk worked, I was loading the disk before starting VPC,
after VPC opened, if I ejected and reinserted the disc it worked fine (just
would force the VPC screen to something tiny and unusable which I could find
no setting to prevent, but the disc worked anyway). Thank you for all the
information. So, if VPC isn't for programs that would require heavy graphics
and/or harware or such, what is the intention of VPC, or rather, how might I
be of need of it in the future?

I'll look into that. Not that the game matters all that much, but I am
enjoying the education!

I did find that the disc worked in VPC, I neede to insert the disc in the
drive after VPC was working. Unfortunately it resized the window into
something too small to use, and I couldn't find any settings to prevent it.
Anyhow, I'll look into the multibooting as I still have my old copy of XPpro.
