VGA/Display/Resolution problems in Linux Debian 4.04 under vpc 2007

Message:

This involves Microsoft Virtual Machine 2007 and an unsupported OS, so
please, if it floats your boat, go ahead and tell me that Debian is an
unsupported OS and tell me to get VMware, etc.,................I need a
laugh.

I did a netinstall, mirrored it (which probably downloaded every piece of
software ever written for it), and the desktop is totally screwed. It is
mostly black with a few horizontal color bars.

I did manage to make out a User/Password request and my login was
accepted.

I did manage to drop the desktop with ctrl-alt-f2 and I am logged in as a
user. I have the root password if necessary.

So I am ready to edit config files as necessary, making necessary text
changes, though it would be nice to know how to start the proper editor
and navigate to the proper files..................

Any help out there?

FACE
