Hey guys,

I am using virtual PC 2007 on a Windows XP machine.

The XP machine has one network adapter. Let's assume the host IP is
192.168.1.1

I want to create two virtual pc's running windows server 2008. I will set
the first server IP to 10.10.1.1 and the second server IP to 10.10.1.2

I want the two servers to be able to see each other on their subnet.

How do I do this?

one way would be setting network settings on both VPCs to local only,
in this way both VPCs will see each other ...

I want my XP host to be in a virtual network with my windows 2003 server. I
also want the guest server to be not available on my company LAN. Is that
the default of installing Virtual server, or do I need to configure. I tried
created a share on the server, but I could not access it from the XP host.

Shut down the guest, go into the Settings for the guest in the VPC2007
console and set the number of network cards back to 1.
Then use the combobox to select the loopback adapter as Adapter 1.

In the *host* go to the Connections window and select the properties
of the loopback adapter. Go to the TCPIP line and then Properties.
Change the IP address item from automatic to specific and give it for
example the address 192.168.11.1.

Then start the guest and once it is running go to *its* Connections
and select the network card inside (it will be a 21140 card), go to
the TCPIP properties and set the address to 192.168.11.2.

Now, provided that the firewalls are set to allow ping replies, you
should be able to ping the guest from the host and the host from the
guest.

Normal Windows network shared folders is the simplest....
Just create a share on the guest file system and then connect to it
from the host like you would any other pair of PC:s on a network.

Hi Bo,

I placed this message on this newsgroup. Because I did not know the
location of the newsgroup for Microsoft Virtual Server. I was thinking that
perhaps your suggestions work better for Virtual PC than Server. I tried to
implement your suggestions in Virtual Server anyway, thinking that perhaps
that VPC and VS are similar enough that it still might work. Later I did
find the newsrgoup for VS, But I did not like the suggestions people posted
there
so I tried yours anyway.

I have not succeded at getting VS to work as you suggested. I am thinking of
unistalling VS and installing VPC instead. I am look to have MS SQL Server
and
Sharepoint running in a Virtual Machine. I still want to have the host
machine be
Windows XP and the guest Windows Server 2003.

So what is you suggestion. Should I just keep trying to get Virual Server
working. Or is VPC easier and perhaps I should uninstall VS and replace with
VPC.

In any case thank you for all the time you have spent with me so far

Hi Bo -

It looks like I finally got virtualization to work on my laptop.

I removed Virtual Server and replaced it with Virtual PC.

Then I redid the steps that you gave me. So far the guest and
host Virtual Machines are communicating. I tried connecting the host
to my company's LAN and the guest machine does not seem visible on the
LAN, which was desired. Tommorw I will try installing SQL and see if I can
do queries from the host to the guest.
