Actually, the ICS option does allow communications between the host
and guest, it's a real local "LAN" with local addresses in the
192.168.0.x range if I remember correctly, and a "router" task to
route to the internet.

But both allow the Internet connection via the host.

It does. But when I right click the connection and select properties, there

There is no "Sharing" tab to select.

What you now have to do is enable ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) on the
host machine so that the guest can share the connection. If you have never
done that, type ICS into Vista Help and Support for instructions.
Select your USB NIC as the connection to share and the loopback adapter
as the private interface in ICS. Assign the NIC in the vm to the loopback
adapter option (from Settings in the VPC Console window).
If your vm is set to get its network config automatically (which is the
default setting) the vm should get its config from ICS when it boots and be
able to connect to both the host and/or the Internet.

Thanks for the replys. I got it fixed, somewhat by accident. One of the
other networks showing did have the "Share" tab. I enabled ICS on that
network, and selected the (NAT) connection in the VPC control panel. Now
have an internet connection in the guest OS. I don't know if I need to
remove the loopback adapter hardware or not. I will let it sit there for the
time being.

On Windows XP:
- Network card properties
- Advanced tab
- Internet connection sharing box
- Checkbox "Allow other network users to connect....."
So there is no "tab" for ICS in the XP case.
What operating system do you use on the host?

I think it is the Shared Networking option in VPC which doesn't give
you guest to host connection.

If it works using Shared Networking (NAT) you do not need the loopback
adapter.
You can uninstall it, or simply disable it.
