How do I control the way that full screen mode works (stretch to fit, or center)

Hi All,

I'm using Virtual PC to boot a Windows XP virtual machine.

When I go into full screen mode, I get one of two behaviors:

1) The screen covers as much of my 1920x1200 monitor as it needs to,
and the screen is blank (black) elsewhere with the desktop centered.
For instance, if my virtual XP desktop is set to 1600x1200, then my
1920x1200 monitor will show my virtual desktop in the middle, with two
black bars down the sides (160px wide on each side)
2) The virtual desktop is stretched to cover the entire 1920x1200
monitor. The aspect ratio is not preserved and things have a
"stretched" appearance.

The behavior I want is 1). Sometimes I get it, sometimes I don't. I
can't figure out why sometimes I get 1), and other times I get 2).
How do I always get the 1) behavior?

There is a setting in the Virtual PC console, "File"/ "Options"/
"Full-Screen Mode":"Do not adjust resolution". This is intended to get you
behaviour (1), that is when you switch to fullscreen mode the display
resolution does not change, and the VM's [virtual] display will appear

This answer does not the apply if the "sometimes" in your question also
means "on the same machine, without changing settings". In such a case, see
if there aren't other factors that control streching the display image. I
had (and still have) a laptop who's display has a native resolution on
1024x768, and which by default streches the image if setting a lower
resolution; but it can be set to display the lower resolution screens in the
middle of the physical display, without any streching. There's a tool,
specific for that laptoon and its display adapter, that changes this
setting.
