There is no way around this; it is currently a design limitation, that
have been hoping Microsoft will correct for as long as I've been usin
Virtual PC 2007 (about a year now.) You could try another couple of fre
products that do support USB
'VMware Player, Virtual Machine, Virtual PC - VMware
(http://www.vmware.com/products/player/
'VMware Server, Virtual Server Consolidation, Free Virtualization
VMware' (http://www.vmware.com/products/server/
I haven't tried the VMware server (which is used to build the virtua
machine) on my Vista pc, but according to a friend of mine it works an
I know it does because he built me a Vista Ultimate x64 virtual machine
even though it is intended to operate on a server. But I hav
experimented around with VMplayer a good bit with various pre-buil
Linux systems that I downloaded

If so, I would think you would simply choose that as the network adapter for
the VM to use.

That's right.
VPC for Windows has never had direct USB support in the way that e.g. VPC
for Mac or VMware does - I doubt it ever will...
There is no way that a virtual guest can access a host's USB ports directly,
other than through standard network sharing.
There are reports of people who use software which maps a physical USB port
to a virtual serial port on the host and then point the VM at that, but I've
never tried it...

Outlook only needs the network access to the mail server you use and
that is all. No USB is needed for that.

If the host has an Internet connection, you can set up the guest to
share that connection using ICS on the host. (It does not really matter how
that machine connects to the network.) It is similar to using ICS for two
physical machines only simpler. You do not need to install a second NIC in
the host for the "private" network. All you need is a Microsoft Loopback
Adapter installed in the host.

Wrong question. The question is why USB support isn't available when it IS
clearly possible - VMWare proves that.
Does that even matter in the sense that VPC has pointless and groundless
limitations that cause person after person to keep asking the same question
about VPC's lack about USB support?
It really sucks when the answer to each and every question has to be "try
VMware, it works where VPC does not". And that leads to the real question...

Indeed. If you don't like the product, don't use it.
When you buy a car, you buy the one which best suit your purposes. You
can't swap features between makes and models. If you want a sports car and a
truck you need two vehicles.
