the comm port settings in both Win 98 and XP. The application does not
require any form of flow control.

When I try to establish comms, the port is looking for hardware flow
control. The comms port times out as it can not establish a connectio.
However, when I've used a break out box to simulate hardware flow control,
comms is established.

Is this a limitation of Virtual PC, a comms port driver problem or something
else all together?

Windows events on arriving com port data so if the application is

I modified our software (we are making the com program ourselves) to
use a timer to poll for incoming data instead just to check what was

Then I checked the previous (then stable) VPC release (VPC2004SP1)
using the exact same guest installation (I made a copy of the VHD file
and created a new guest in VPC2004SP1).
In this environment I did not have to use the stupid timer to poll for
data, in VPC2004SP1 the com port communications worked just fine! :-)

So now I have two VPC installations:
VPC2007SP1 for guests where I don't need to use RS232 COM ports
VPC2004SP1 for guests that will use RS232

You can install VPC2004SP1 if you already have installed VPC2007 (but
not the other way around) provided that when you install VPC2004SP1
you us ethe "Custom Install" and select a different program target
directory. Then also create a shortcut to VPC2004 that is separate
from the VPC2007 shortcut so you can decide which one you will run.

Beware!
Both programs use the same guest shortcut data in the console list so
all your guests will show up in both environments! However, you must
make sure you run the 2004 guests *only* with VPC2004 otherwise
corruption may happen. Especially important if you save state between
sessions.
