My old computer is XP Pro 32-bit. My new computer is Vista Home Premium
64-bit. I am trying to install an old piece of software (Chartview
navigation) that ran fine on my old computer. When I try to install on the
new I get an error message that indicates to me that the software won't (?)
run on 64-bit. If I install Virtual PC will it run? Or does virtualization
only allow OS with the same bit to run? I know that didn't sound very
technical, but am unsure what terminology to use.

well I'm trying to do the virtual machine thing. This is all new to me. The
partition seems to be formatting. There were some choices I had to make
where I had no idea what was meant. If I screw this whole thing up, can I
"undo" it all somehow?

VPC will run almost all 32bit operating systems and XP runs fine. As long
as Chartview does not require special hardware it should be OK. To use VPC
be sure to download the 64bit version (because you are running a 64bit OS).
Every thing you do in the guest XP will be 32bit.

You have to create a virtual machine and then install Windows. It's a
computer just like a physical one.

image? That confused me. I have a CD from which to install XP Pro. So I
chose CD > Use Physical E Drive. I hope that was the correct choice.

An ISO image is a copy of a CD in a file format. You can mount an ISO
image in place of a CD or DVD. Of course, you would either need to
have created your OWN ISO image from a CD first, or downloaded one
from somewhere.
