I have a vhd with undo enabled that was approximately 6.5 GB. The reported
size of the files on the vhd was only about 4.5 GB. I know disk space is
cheap but the result of cheap disk space is that backup time has become very
premium. So I wanted to recover the 2 GB to improve backup times.

The first thing I did was disable the undo disk so the following changes
would stick and then I defragged the drive and used Precompact to zero out
the free space. I did not check the file size at this point.

Next I used the VPC 2007 virtual disk wizard to compact the vhd into a new
file, preserving the old file just-in-case.

When the whole process was done, the original file was 9.2 GB and the
compacted file was 9.1 GB

YIKES. This is terrible. What happened?

sharepoint backups being saved within the VM. This caused the vhd to expand
from 18GB to 32GB. I deleted all the sharepoint backups and the virtual
machine reported only 19GB of space being used, so I did a defrag of the
vhd. When it was done the vhd had expanded to 41GB! I need to get that size
back down to around 20GB.

Any thoughts?

First, having undo disks makes you use more drive space, not less. If
you're serious about using less space disable undo discs, if just for long
enough to shrink stuff. Second grab a trial of Invirtus' VM Optimizer. It
does everything it says it will. Here's a short blog entry about my
experiences with it,

run once on a VM and is good for 14 days. Once is all you'll need to get
your VHD files under control again.
