I'm very interested to know how you got 7.04 to install, as it always seems
to get so far and then just "hang"... I had no problems with 6.10...
There was a thread in here a few weeks back where someone posted
instructions on how to do it - you might be able to find it at www.deja.com

Hi Mark
I am using VirtualPC 2007 with Vista Home Premium. I had problems with
Ubuntu 7.04 at first with 'hanging' before installation complete. I then
increased virtual memory to 500Kb and virtual disk to 5Gb and installed with
restricted graphics. It then installed ok. My remaining problem is that the
mouse pointer doesn't work in the virtual PC window.
Thank you for the link but I have been unable to find out how to fix the
pointer problem.
Incidentally VirtualPC 2007 does work fine with Vista and Windows XP as the
guest OS.

Virtual PC emulates a PS/2 mouse. Unfortunately there is a bug in Ubuntu
7.04 Fiesty Fawn preventing it from using PS/2 mice (also when connected
physically).
You can have a look at
http://arcanecode.wordpress.com/2007/05/17/fixing-ubuntu-704-fiesty-
fawn-mouse-under-virtual-pc-2007/ for a (complicated) workaround. Or you
can wait for a patch being released for Ubuntu

Microsoft didn't create the additions for their own operating systems since
they do not have a Linux operating system.
Microsoft created the additions for specific versions of Linux, (RedHat &
Suse) and only for Virtual Server. They may work on other versions of Linux
but MS doe not support them for other versions and they do not support them
under Virtual PC and as far as I have found no one has been able to get them
to work on Ubuntu. You can install them but they do nothing.

The bug is not in Ubuntu, it is in the Linux kernel itself and affects other
distributions also. Follow the instructions at the arcanecode link above to
get the mouse working. You can get the additions to install in Ubuntu but
they do nothing.

I still haven't succeeded in installing VMAdditions so that I can use shared
filders. Is there a fix for this?

Answers: The additions do nothing, and will NOT make the mouse work.
Problems with the mouse:
The workaround only lets you use your keyboard as the mouse.
There is a new workarround that gets the mouse working, however every time you load Ubuntu, you have to select the right kernal in grub, (Press ESC every time you load).
Here are the instructions:
Follow the keyboard workaround
Go to Firefox
Go to : https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.20/+bug/87262/comments/13
Download the "Shell Script" to your desktop.
Left ALT + F1
Places
Home Folder
Find the file
Select it
Left ALT + ENTER
Go to permissions
Allow executing file as program
Close
Select file again
ENTER
Run in terminal
Enter Password when asks
----
ENTER when asks
Reboot
Keep pressing ESC to get to GRUB boot loader.
Select "Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.20-15-generic-with-unsupported-patch-for-87262"
ENTER
=====================================
HEY PRESTO!
Your mouse should work again!

Message:Using the links below, I got 7.04 installed in VPC 2007 and got the mouse to
work--even after a reboot. however, I have no networking --which I will put
in a query in this group.
Here is the solution of getting a "keyboard mouse" so that you can at least
install 7.04.
http://arcanecode.wordpress.com/2007/04/25/ubuntu-704-and-virtual-pc-2007-mouse-issue-workaround-sort-of/
After you have installed it, you need to fix it so that you have a real
mouse again and not need the keyboard mouse. This page explains that about

There is another way to fix this and it does not go away. Just add a “kernal
paramater” of “i8042.noloop” (without quotes). If your like me and scratch
your head when you see “kernal paramater”, go here
http://grumpymole.blogspot.com/2007/05/ubuntu-how-to-edit-grub-boot-parameters.html
Thanks to Phillip Lougher for showing me how.

I never used Ubuntu, but for Fedora 7 the kernel option "i8042.noloop" fixed
the "PS/2 mouse stuck in the middle of the screen" problem. If that's the
problem descried here, give it a try. It doesn't need a different/patched
kernel, and can also be specified (in Fedora at least) when booting the
installer.
